  1. Dear ladies at Yarn Alive,
I belong to a Spinners and Weavers guild in Iowa. Many of us also have commerically spun yarn (and certainly some to share). However, my question is whether any of the women would like to work with hand-spun yarn. Also I would like to know if anyone has an interest in learning to spin yarn with a drop spindle (very simple and inexpensive hand-held spindle). These are available for as little as 22$ US and are not as fast as a spinning wheel but allow one to learn spinning in a very inexpensive manner and also can be taken and used anywhere.
Please let me know when you are able if this is of interest. I am very excited about what you are doing. I read about you in the Wall Street Journal.
    Best wishes.

  2. Thank you for getting Yarn Alive going, enabling the rest of us to join in your group! God bless your efforts!! We have a special soft spot for Japan and its anguishing tsunami troubles. Those of us here in Connecticut, who were so agrieved for the Japanese victims of last March, are so happy to now be able to help them through your organization, in this very special, very personal way!

  3. I ripped the article out of the Wall Street Journal and put it in my knitting bag. We were on the way home from vacation and I thought, I will google this when I get home and see if they have an address where you can send the yarn…Thanks to the person who made this blog! I am going to round up some yarn from my friends and send it over. Best regards to all of you in Japan. Our thoughts and prayers are still with you.

  4. May the Lord bless all of you and
all the needle work. I’ll be praying for each one of you. That your lives will be enriched by the yarn.
I ll be sending yarn from Los Angeles.
Wish we could be with you.
    Love From,
    Madeline and Rose Ito

  5. Konnichawa!

I was blessed to visit Japan in May of 2011 for two weeks. The people of Japan were absolutely enchanting and gracious, despite the tragedy and horror their country had just been through. I’ve never met such resilient and stoic, yet sweet people.

So, two boxes of all kinds of yarn are on their way from Arizona to you wonderful ladies. It isn’t much, hopefully I can rally some of my AZ knitters and we can send more. I look forward to following this blog and your progress. I hold you close to my heart.

  6. What is the least expensive way to ship yarn/needles/patterns, etc. to Japan? I have a lot of extra yarn and several sizes/types of needles. I would love to contribute to this worthy cause, but shipping costs from the U.S. to Japan seem extremely high.

    • Hi Trudy,
Yes unfortunately shipping to Japan is rather expensive. However we have heard from some people who have gotten a bit creative and found different places to get discounts on postage! Alternatively, you could try sea mail. We don’t mind receiving yarn in a couple of months!
      Thanks Trudy!

  7. I was so inspired by your work! I am about to send some yarn off to you, but I wanted to ask–I have some lovely yarn that *isn’t* brightly colored. Should I include that, or should I send it to a different charity? I won’t be at all offended if you only want brightly colored yarn–just let me know!

  9. Dear Yarn Alive. My quilt ministry/prayer shawl ministry has collected 3 boxes of yarn, needles and knitting ‘goodies’ for the women in Japan. We even have a fellow parishioner who is willing to ship the boxes for free. We like free! However he needs a phone number in Japan as a point of contact for the boxes. Could you please help us out? Love, Beth G

  10. After reading the article in the WSJ and contacting the church in Ohio, the Prayer shawl Group of Berwyn United Methodist Church in Berwyn, PA has sent 2 10 pound boxes of yarn and knitting needles to the group in Hanabuchihama, Japan. Our circle of knitters continue to pray for these very brave and creative women who live in such a storm-ravaged area of Japan. We join prayers with them as they knit their way to more blessed days.
